– What is Spirit Day?
An annual day held on the third thursday of October when millions of Americans wear purple to speak out against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

•• Her 2005 diabetes diagnosis “completely overwhelmed” her, but the Emmy nominee is feeling great these days and helping her fellow diabetics with a new documentary.

Elizabeth Perkins is always a scene stealer, and her performance in ABC’s “How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” is no exception. Elizabeth Perkins plays Elaine, the laidback, free-spirited wife of Brad Garrett’s Max, and mama to Sarah Chalke’s single mom Polly, who moves in with Elaine and Max after her recent divorce.

The comedy didn’t make the cut for the network’s 2013-14 lineup, but Perkins’s TV schedule isn’t likely to remain open for long. Yahoo! TV talked to the actress about “Parents,” about her new documentary, which spotlights a fresh take on how diabetics can approach their health issues, and about “Weeds” and how she thinks Celia deserved a big send-off in the series finale.

-Elaine is definitely one of the least grandma-y grandmas on TV…
Yeah, that’s why I loved her. I loved Elaine. I just think she’s awesome. I had been on “Weeds” for five seasons, playing somebody who was incredibly bitter and angry and down. It’s not easy playing somebody like that (laughing) week after week. When (series creator) Claudia Lonow showed me the script for “How to Live” with Elaine, I thought, here’s a person … the glass is always half full. She’s always going to find the positive. She loves life. She likes to eat it and drink it and taste it. That was kind of where I was in my life, too, so it was a perfect match for me. I get to play somebody who’s happy and alive and stimulated and just loves to laugh and thinks everything’s funny. You don’t get to see a lot of middle aged women like that on TV. We’re usually sort of cranky and controlling… this was really a great opportunity for me, and I get to work with Brad Garrett, who’s awesome.

– You two have great chemistry, like you’ve worked together before, even though you haven’t. Was that instant?
Oh, I love him. He’s just so easy. Yeah, we definitely connected. Like I said, everything’s easy. It’s like I’ve known him forever. He’s such a professional that you can do anything in the middle of the scene, and he’s never thrown, because he’s a standup. He’ll just catch the ball and throw it right back. He likes to have fun, and so does Sarah Chalke. She’s one of the most positive people I’ve ever worked with. It’s a really different environment for me than shooting “Weeds,” which was a very dark, sardonic show. This is like, “How much fun can you have?” It’s perfect, because it’s exactly where I’m at in my life.

•• SANOFI is a pharmaceutical company founded by René Sautier and Jean-François Dehecq on 1973. This corporation continually grew as they were able to acquire a number of French, American, and European pharmaceutical companies. Their aim was to innovate through releasing cures such as: colorectal cancer treatment Eloxatine, human vaccines, multiple sclerosis-alleviator Aubagio, and the life-saving Lantus Insulin Glargine [rDNA origin] injection pen for Type 1 Diabetics. With the pharmaceutical group branching to other parts of the world, one of their main focuses when it comes to diabetic cures would be in the Hispanic country of Spain.

According to medical journals, Type 1 Diabetes is a kind of condition wherein the pancreas does not produce insulin. It has been recorded that an average of a whopping 100,000 young people aged 30 years and below are at risk of being of this disease every year in a study derived from the Catalan Registry of Diabetes Mellitus in Catalonia, Spain between 1989-1998. Being tagged as a rare kind ailment, a lot of Type 1-diagnosed people are still voiceless in terms of making the world aware about this. With this information and the onset of American television series appreciation in the Hispanic country, SANOFI came up with the idea of having a spokesperson that everyone around the world recognizes. Then comes “Weeds” star, Elizabeth Perkins.

“Weeds” is a dramedy (combined drama and comedy) American TV series. The show basically depicts the life struggle of the female protagonist “Nancy Botwin,” played Mary Louise Parker. Suddenly caught in a situation wherein she unwittingly became a jobless widower who has to support 2 children, and the only alternative that she can opt for is to sell “weeds” or a certain illegal substance. Elizabeth on the other was able to land a pivotal supporting role in the show. Playing the character of the rich “Celia Hodes,” Perkin’s alter-ego was all about manipulation and betrayal. With the fact that her role involves backstabbing the female lead, fans increased their affinity to Celia Hodes to the point that every fan of the show “loves to hate her (Celia).” The show gained admirers from across the world, most especially Hispanics as most of the episodes had some of the other characters switch their dialogues to Spanish; given that the lives of all the roles in the show revolve on a fictional Mexican cartel. With an eerie resemblance to issues simmering in Spain and Mexico, the series became a social eye-opener. But as the show gradually catapulted to international fame, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

Despite all these, Perkins was able to squeeze in charitable works. Being a spokesperson for SANOFI’s “Diabetes Co-Stars,” she was able to promote awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and the use of Insulin injection pen; thus being able to make waves even in European countries with high affliction rates like Spain and Italy. Another significant contribution she has done would be attending the Maximum Hope Foundation’s 3rd Celebrity Poker Tournament. As such, this institution aids families that are afflicted with life-threatening illnesses. Much like partypoker tournaments, the event offered many rounds of poker that delighted patrons. Held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Elizabeth participated in several games with celebrities such as: Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, and many more. This project emulated what online poker sites have always promoted: risking a lot, helping others, and having a great experience all at the same time.
With a beauteous face and an impressive acting career, Elizabeth Perkins is truly an ageless icon of Diabetics around the world.
