•• On How to Live With your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life), Polly (Sarah Chalke) has to move back home with her mom Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and stepfather Max (Brad Garrett) after her divorce. Max and Elaine were already pretty swinging throughout Polly’s childhood, as we see in flashbacks, so they’re at a real loss with their grown-up daughter.
Brad Garrett: Fred, how are you?
Elizabeth Perkins: Hi, Fred.
Brad Garrett: I’m fighting the hiccups. This is very embarrassing.
Elizabeth Perkins: Brad has the hiccups.
Brad Garrett: I had a breakfast burrito the size of my head. How are you, Fred? Continue Reading
•• Dysfunctional families and embarrassing parents have always made for prime sitcom fodder, but for “How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)”creator Claudia Lonlow, the inspiration for her new show hit a little closer to home. That’s because almost 16 years ago, Lonlow and her young daughter moved back in with her parents.
And that’s precisely what happens to Sarah Chalke’s Polly, who, along with her daughter, moves in with her mom Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and stepfather Max (Brad Garrett) for the foreseeable future, thanks to a divorce and the pressures of a lackluster economy.
But it’s a decision Polly immediately regrets thanks to her parents, who have a much more laissez-faire approach to child-rearing than she does. Of course, while much is made of Polly’s frustrating parents, Garrett and Perkins see things a little differently, it’s Polly who’s imposing on them.
HuffPost TV recently spoke to the comedic duo about their no-longer empty nest, their instant chemistry, and their advice to parents in similar situations. The show premiered on April 3, yet Garrett and Perkins are already finishing each other’s sentences like the old married couple they portray.
HuffPost TV: So what was it that appealed to you about the show? Had you always been interested in doing something with a twelve-word title?
Elizabeth Perkins: [Laughs] I was looking more for eleven or ten.
Brad Garrett: Yeah, it was longer. They trimmed it. Seriously, that’s not a bit. But well, I wanted to work with two beautiful women who wouldn’t call the authorities on me, and that was Sarah [Chalke] and Ms. Perkins. The pilot script really resonated with us.
Perkins: Thank you. It’s a very interesting premise that I think is very relatable right now in today’s economy. There are a lot of people getting out of college who can’t afford to live on their own. In our case, our daughter Polly, who’s played by Sarah Chalke, goes through a divorce and can’t afford to live on her own. So she and her young six-year-old daughter move in with us and we’ve been kind of loving our empty nest.Garrett: Yeah, we love our empty nest. It’s like, “What’s going on?” Continue Reading

-Episode Synopsis:In the premiere episode, “Pilot” Polly leaves her irresponsible husband, Julian, and taking her young daughter, Natalie, moves back in with her unpredictable parents, Elaine and stepfather Max. Polly (Sarah Chalke) is a single mom who’s been divorced for almost a year. The transition wasn’t easy for her, especially in this economy. So, like a lot of young people living in this new reality, she and her daughter, Natalie (Rachel Eggleston), have moved back home with her eccentric parents, Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and Max (Brad Garrett). But Polly and her parents look at life through two different lenses. Polly’s too uptight. Her parents are too laid back. Polly’s conservative when it comes to dating (no action, whatsoever), while her parents are still sexually adventurous. They think Polly turned out okay, so what’s the big deal? Well, they say it takes a village to raise a child…and in Polly’s case, this village is on fire. But with help from her best friend Gregg (Orlando Jones), her lovable yet irresponsible ex-husband Julian (Jon Dore) and her cool and fun assistant Jenn (Rebecca Delgado Smith) Polly takes her first steps toward getting a life, starting with a social one.
“How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)” stars Sarah Chalke as Polly, Elizabeth Perkins as Elaine, Jon Dore as Julian, Rachel Eggleston as Natalie, Stephanie Hunt as Jenn, and Brad Garrett as Max. The series is produced by Imagine Television in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television.
•• Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett star on the new ABC comedy HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS, premiering tonight Wednesday, April 3rd at 9:30/8:30c.
The actors play eccentric parents Max and Elaine whose recently divorced daughter Polly (Sarah Chalke) moves back home. The transition has not been easy as Polly and her parents look at life through different generational lenses. Polly aspires to be organized and together, while Max and Elaine live a free-flowing, improvisational life-style.
BWW: You two play very unconventional parents on the new series. Can you talk a bit about your characters?
Elizabeth Perkins: Well Elaine is sort of a former flower child, party girl, pot-smoking sort of wild lady who had her daughter very young. She doesn’t really remember raising her daughter, kind of remembers just bits and pieces, and now her daughter has moved back home along with her granddaughter and she’s really at a loss as far as what to do with them.
Brad Garrett: Yeah, see we went through a mid-life crisis in our 20′s and just held on to it. We’re an unconventional couple on TV because we’re happily married and once in a while I even get to have my way. Continue Reading
